  Mitigating Tragedy, Building Self-Sufficiency

War, natural disaster, and political conflict have left deep scars on civilian populations in Sri Lanka — those torn from their homes, separated from their families, and left without resources or support in communities ill-equipped to help them.

In the aftermath of disaster, the UN Country Team agencies supply food, shelter, medicines and logistical support to the victims — most of whom are children, women and the elderly. The UN’s goal is to help vulnerable households and displaced persons to become self-sufficient by providing the immediate and transitional assistance needed to start anew.
