The achievement of its Millennium Development Goal targets is one of the main priorities of the Sri Lankan Government.
Sri Lanka has made significant progress towards achieving many of the MDGs. Despite this strong track record, there are deep regional disparities within Sri Lanka across a range of MDG indicators, which contradict the generally high national aggregate figures. There are also specific challenges associated with income, poverty and child nutrition, while, the conflict affected areas present additional and different challenges.
The main focus areas of achievement of MDGs in Sri Lanka are:
- MDG campaigning and advocacy
- Incorporation of the MDGs into national policy frameworks and down to sub-national levels
- Capacity development
- Monitoring progress of the MDGs
The Sri Lanka National Campaign for Achieving the MDGs is spearheaded and administered by the Ministry of Finance & Planning, with the support of the UN Country Team and with direct implementation assistance by the UN Development Programme (UNDP). The National Council for Economic Development (NCED) brings together stakeholders from the private and state sectors to develop economic policies and action plans, at national and local levels. | |
