Humanitarian Asistance   Tsunami Assistance Page last updated at Monday, 07 July 08

The UN has helped the country recover from the economic and social devastation caused by the 26 December 2004 Asian Tsunami. The UN Country Team agencies responded rapidly after the tsunami at the request of the Sri Lankan government, assisting over 800,000 people in all affected districts, with a total aid of USD 550 million. This work covered a wide range of needs from the distribution of food and medicines, to critical psychosocial support and environmental remediation. Following the emergency phase, the UN Country Team focused on getting people back to their homes, assisting in their livelihood and community infrastructure needs, and on preparing the country for any future disasters.
