The UN Resident Coordinator is the senior UN official in a given country, and is the representative of the UN Secretary-General. In a country like Sri Lanka, where humanitarian aid is being provided, the Resident Coordinator might also assume the role of Humanitarian Coordinator. As the title suggests, the central task of the RC/HC is to coordinate the operational activities of the UN.

This is done in consultation with country representatives of UN agencies and in conformity with the objectives and priorities of the government. For better coordination of the work of UN Country Team in Sri Lanka, agencies have established various thematic groups and task forces around issues of leading importance in Sri Lanka.

The Office of the Resident Coordinator addresses;
  • Operational Coordination

(Support to national coordination, including the country strategy papers, the common country assessment, UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), field-level committees, Inter-agency thematic groups, joint programming etc.)

  • Management Coordination

(Common services, Team-building and inter-agency training, representation of non-resident UN agencies, security etc)

  • Advocacy for the UN system,

(Support the advancement of UN system objectives and mandates)

The annual reports of the UN Resident Coordinator for Sri Lanka provide a comprehensive description of the coordinated work of the UN country team during the year.
