UN-HABITAT is operational in nine districts in Sri Lanka and is implementing the following projects:
All projects follow a community-based approach to housing rehabilitation and reconstruction, pioneered by UH-HABITAT in the 1980’s in Sri Lanka. The beneficiaries participate in the decision-making process and the implementation of the project. In helping to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, UN-HABITAT in collaboration with the Government of Sri Lanka, has identified the following areas as priorities for its intervention.
- Assistance to Tsunami Displaced Persons;
- Upgrading Informal Settlements (SUF)
- Access to Basic Urban Services in Municipalities;
- Lunawa Lake Environment Improvement and Community Development;
- Urban Governance Support;
- Rebuilding Communities in the North and East of Sri Lanka;
- Rebuilding Fisheries Communities of Sri Lanka; and
- Rebuilding Community Infrastructure & Shelter

- Transfer of informal settlement “slum” dwellers, presently living under sub-human conditions to good quality housing, through promoting sustainable finance mechanisms.
- Improve basic facilities including shelter, safe drinking water, sanitary needs, drainage, waste management and safe living environment
- Develop a National Housing Policy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing Ensure security of property rights
