Facts about UNOPS Country Programme
UNOPS initiated its operations in
Sri Lanka in January 2005 to support the tsunami reconstruction process
as a technical partner of UNICEF. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs
formally accredited UNOPS Sri Lanka Operations Centre in October 2005.
UNOPS undertake the design and construction of: schools, clinics,
hospitals, bridges, roads, water supply schemes, social care centres,
housing and emergency IDP shelters, in both tsunami and conflict
affected areas. |

UNOPS also provides operations and research services. It also provides operational as well as procurement services to multiple clients. All project activities are carried out in close coordination with relevant partner agencies and government departments. Project implementation is carried out through a combination of subcontracting and direct implementation. In each case UNOPS manages the entire process, from inception to commissioning and final hand-over. To date UNOPS has undertaken over 240 building projects, ranging from permanent steel bridges to emergency shelters across 10 districts of Sri Lanka and have successfully completed over 150 buildings.
UNOPS is mandated to provide clients with the best value for money on a non-profit basis. Commitment to the goals of the UN and independent and neutral status, together with application of sound business principles make UNOPS an ideal partner to Governments, other UN agencies and NGOs.
With a head office based in Colombo, UNOPS delivers its multi-sectoral engineering and operations management portfolio through a network of eleven offices island-wide.
Its in-house technical expertise utilizes private sector skills and professionalism to implement complex national programmes. UNOPS delivers its engineering and operational portfolio through a team of some 600 national experts and 30 international technical specialists. The team includes specialists in: structural, agricultural, electrical, mechanical, environmental and civil engineering, architecture, construction management, public health, law and design.
UNOPS supports the tsunami reconstruction work of the Ministry of Health, Education, Highways, Provincial Councils and Local Government and the National Water Supply and Drainage Board.
